This class will explore different musical productions, themes, and composers. Past topics have included: theater history from 1850 to today; the influences of minstrel, vaudeville and burlesque shows on pre-Broadway theater; influential writers in the early 1900s; the Golden Age of Broadway; influential writers and directors of the 1960s-80s; acting through song; song interpretation, casting and reimagining musicals; race in musical theater; the history and influence of Disney on Broadway; politics and current events in musical theater; writing a musical - the power of opening numbers and I want songs; turning a novel into a musical; performance coaching and the science of singing; and Broadway of today and tomorrow! The winter session will build on these themes. Come learn about the drama behind the curtain and what makes a show a show.
8 classes, $130. Classes are in the evenings, every other week, one day per week. An option to sign up for individual lectures will also be available.
